June 2021 Newsletter

Chairman’s Corner

Greetings to all IHF Veterans, volunteers and supporters!

The big news we have to share is the National Honor Flight Network has set mid-August as a “return to flight status” date! We have been grounded since March of 2020 and as a result we have missed several flights. This is very good news, and we are excited to begin to plan for our return to the air. This is a welcome first step and our local board is determined to provide the very best flight experience.

There are a host of details we still have to manage and some speedbumps we need to work around before we can fly. As many of you know, our process differs from many of the other Honor Flight hubs around the country. Many hubs meet at the airport, assign guardians and then on their return, the Homecoming is held at the airport. We do things quite differently and feel our version offers a better experience for our heroes. We want all future Veterans to have the same wonderful, once-in-a-lifetime experience as the previous 2,700 we have flown.

As an example of some of the issues we face, currently our normal base of operations, Plainfield High School, is not allowing outside groups into the school. There are also restrictions still in place in Washington, D.C. that we feel would hamper the “normal” way we want to honor our Veterans. There are many other smaller issues that remain, but the vaccination requirement for all flight staff, Guardians and Veterans will remain for any flight in 2021.

We will continue to monitor the ever-changing restrictions and we are working hard to figure out how to properly honor our Hoosier heroes. We will be sure to post changes and further information on our FaceBook page as we continue to plan. We will be flying, but we want to do it right!

In the meantime, we have been blessed to have several events and fundraisers recently. It is awesome to be able to visit with our Veterans and supporters in person. We will continue to share these events as they come up and encourage everyone to participate. It means so much to IHF to have this terrific base of businesses, civic groups and individuals who are loyal supporters of our mission. Thank you!

Just a reminder, if your address or phone number has changed, please send us a note at Info@indyhonorflight.org or call our phone number ; 317-559-1600, so we can keep our contact information up to date. We appreciate it very much!

Enjoy the summer weather and stay healthy and safe!

In service,

Dale True, IHF Chairman

Chairman’s Corner

Greetings and Happy Spring to All!

We hope this note finds all of you happy to have most of the cold weather behind us (but it is still Indiana and they are playing Basketball, so…)!

We are very happy to hear from so many of you who have been able to be vaccinated and to see the overall numbers looking better. As of this writing anyone age 16 or over is now eligible for the vaccine! We have been watching all of the progress very closely and we are proud of the way Indiana has handled the process. We are in better shape than several other states. Please continue to wear your masks when you are out from just your family, safe is better than sorry, regardless of your vaccination status. Please remember your vaccine is not at full value until two (2) weeks after your second shot (for those taking Moderna or Pfizer). We still have a ways to go for everyone to be safe.

Some other good news is some of activities are getting close to be able to enjoy. One important event we are very excited about is the dedication of the Gold Star Families Memorial in Indianapolis on Saturday, May 1st at 1:30PM. They memorial will be placed on the Southwest corner of North Pennsylvania and St. Clair Streets. You can learn more about the memorial along with a look at the finished memorial concept on the website: www.hwwmohf.org.

On Saturday, May 15th, from 10:00am to 7:00pm a reduced scale replica of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier will be on display at the Elks Lodge, 223 E 3rd St in Rushville, IN. If you have not seen the Tomb in person or are unable to travel to D.C, this is a wonderful opportunity. We have visited the Tomb on every one of our flights and I can attest it never grows old. I get a chill every time I see it.

As we already shared, the Avon Cruise-In will also begin its summer run on Saturday May 1st! at 6pm. The Hales have been staunch supporters of the Indy Honor Flight and all proceeds from the event’s 50-50 drawing, shirt sales, etc. go to IHF. The show is free to attend and draws a great crowd of car folks every Saturday evening! We always like to thank the Avon Lowes for donating the use of their parking lot for the event, it is much appreciated! We hope to see you at 7893 E US Hwy 36, in Avon, IN.

While we are still officially grounded through the end of August as of this writing, we continue to honor our Veterans in any way we safely can. We are still accepting applications for Veterans, Guardians and Volunteers and we will happily take your donations so we will all be VERY ready to fly when we get the go signal! As a reminder, please let us know if you have moved, changed your phone number, etc. by sending us an EMAIL to Info@indyHonorFlight.org. If you do not have computer access, please call us at 317-559-1600 and a Volunteer will take your information. Having updated information really helps us help our Veterans!

The Honor Flight Mission is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for those who have served us in wartime. We are privileged to have this opportunity to honor these Veterans and we take every opportunity to do so. Please follow us on FaceBook for updates!

Meanwhile, please take the time to thank any Veteran you come into contact with and always watch for those “magic hats” worn by these heroes. Your “thank you for your service” or “welcome home” means a lot to these heroes. Stay safe!

Dale True, IHF Chairman

Discharge papers – How to keep them safe or get copies

Often times we received phone calls from a veteran’s family looking for their discharge papers for burial benefits. Trying to track down important documents while preparing for the funeral of your loved on is hard.

We have a few tips to help ease the difficulty during that time.

  • Keep your DD214 and other important papers in a safe place at home and tell your loved ones where they are.
  • Do not keep them in a safe deposit box at the bank as obtaining those documents after the passing of a loved is difficult.
  • If you do not have the discharge documents needed you can reach out to your county Veterans Affairs Officer for assistance. Be as specific as you can about their service, even the smallest detail can help.
  • Veterans please please please share your story with your family. Tiny details of your service can be an asset when/if they have to track down your discharge papers.
  • The website for the State of Indiana is:
    https://www.in.gov.dva/locate-your-cvso/

This gives you an interactive map to find the information for all counties in the state!

A few around the Indy area are:

Marion County 317-327-8387
Hancock Count 317-462-8767
Hendricks County 317-745-9239
Hamilton County 317-776-9610

March 2021 Newsletter

Chairman’s Corner

Greetings to all of our Veterans, family and supporters!

We are just days away from Spring and things are looking better! As of the time of this writing the State of Indiana is allowing those age 50 and older to be vaccinated. This age adjustment clearly covers all of our eligible Veterans, many of their family members and our wonderful volunteers. Our hope is as the numbers of protected persons increase, so will our chances of being able to fly again! This news, along with some warmer air and bright sunshine is making everyone feel better.

Our local Board of Directors has been monitoring the local and national events along with staying in contact with the Honor Flight Network for updates. While nothing has officially changed, we are seeing some good indicators of positive results.

One event is still going on as planned; the annual Avon Cruise-In will begin as planned on the first Saturday of May! Since this is an outdoor event, we are able to continue to partner with our good friends the Hales and continue this terrific event for another summer. As an added bonus, new t-shirts will be available for purchase at the event! This event has raised thousands of dollars in donations for Indy Honor Flight and this year is no different. All money raised benefits our ability to find, equip and prepare for our flight of honor. See you at 6 PM, the Lowes parking lot, 7893 E US 36 in Avon. A great opportunity to see some fine cars and safely visit with friends while you support Indy Honor Flight. The Cruise-In is FREE, just like a flight to D.C. for an eligible WWII, Korea or Vietnam wartime Veteran!

The National Honor Flight Network has partnered with the AARP to provide a web-based anti-scam program at 7 PM on March 9th. Please see the information for this important program below. I assure you there are many crooks out there trying to take advantage of all of us every day, so watch and learn how to protect yourself and your family. The program is open to all!

Sadly, IHF lost a good friend recently. Ron Freese, an award-winning model builder and long-time IHF supporter passed away. Many of you recall seeing Ron and a sample of his models at our dinners and reunions. His super-detailed dioramas and various war machines brought back many memories for our Veterans and a way to start many wonderful stories. He was a loving, talented and very patient man. Our condolences to his lovely wife, Deanna, and his children and grand-children.

This is a reminder to all of us to take a moment to enjoy life each day and spend time with our friends and family. Also it serves as a reminder to please help us keep our records updated. If you are aware of a Veteran who has flown with us or is on our waiting list and has moved, changed a phone number/email or, sadly, passed away, please contact us. Our contact information is shown below and is on our website 24 hours a day.

We are still in business; we are accepting Veteran/Guardian/Volunteer applications, all are available on our website. Once we get a release, stand by to see us reaching out to those Veterans who have been patiently waiting! In the meantime, please stay healthy and safe!

Dale True
Chairman, Indy Honor Flight

Chairman’s Corner

Happy New Year to all!

Everyone with Indy Honor Flight joins me in wishing a not-to-fond farewell to 2020 and bright hopes for 2021. It was a rough year, we have never been grounded before and we have had to adjust to many changes with our operations. We did NOT change one thing; we love and honor our Veterans! Our dedication and desire to honor everyone on our waiting list with their Honor Flight has not slipped, in spite of a global pandemic! We are watching the winds of change closely and we remain hopeful we will be able to fly in 2021.

Speaking of the pandemic, one of the best ways you can help is to be vaccinated. The State of Indiana is working hard to provide more vaccination sites and well over 240,000 Hoosiers over the age of 70 have registered for a vaccination at the time of this message! The shots are free and when I got mine I did not even feel the needle! Please consider getting a vaccination if at all possible. The following website is how you can choose where to go and when:

CLICK HERE FOR MORE INFO ON HOW TO SIGN UP FOR THE COVID VACCINE

Click on the “click here to find a vaccination site and register” and it will show you the entire state of locations. Click on the locations closest to you. If you do not have a computer, call 211 from any phone and someone will be able to assist you. Please remember, the vaccine requires two doses and you do not have the best level of protection until two (2) weeks after your second dose. Indy Honor Flights’ medics and medical associates are strongly recommending our most at risk folks get the vaccine as soon as possible!

Our volunteers are taking advantage of this down time to update our records; if you have changed your phone number, address or other contact information, please call us or send an email so we can make sure your information is up-to-date! Our contact information is on our website 24/7 and is also shown below on this newsletter. Sadly, we are also hearing of some of our heroes passing. If you are aware of any of our Veterans reporting for duty above, please let us know so we can make the changes in our records. These types of notices are the only part of this mission we do not enjoy.

If anyone needs a speaker for a group or if any civic or volunteer organization would like to learn more about the Honor Flights, please let us know and we will be very happy to help! We love to tell our story and make more Hoosiers aware of our mission.

Remember there are three other Honor Flight Hubs in Indiana; Lafayette, Fort Wayne and Evansville all have terrific volunteers who do what we do! We always encourage Veterans to fly as close to their home as possible. The surrounding states also have hubs, there are about 125 Honor Flight Hubs across the country!
As we go through the winter months, please use caution on the slippery streets and sidewalks, we don’t want anyone to miss a flight due to a fall. We hope you all stay warm, stay healthy and you get a vaccine! We love you!

In service,
Dale True, IHF Chairman

December 2020 Newsletter

Chairman’s Corner

Merry Christmas to all IHF Veterans, family, volunteers and donors!

At this very special time of year we are very grateful to be able to serve our Hoosier heroes, it means so much to our terrific volunteers to see the smiles and hear the stories of those we serve. Speaking of stories, if you get to spend time with any Veteran, ask about their story. It may take some coaxing to get them to open up, but you will never regret listening. Many Veterans are so humble about their actions, but remember, without their service we would not have the freedom we cherish. It makes no difference how they served; a mechanic in Cleveland, a combat medic in the delta, an LST skipper off of Normandy, all served us with pride and selfless actions.

We remember those we lost, we serve those still with us, we honor all. Our flights and normal activities are still on hold, but we are encouraged by some of the recent developments. We continue to work with our national board of directors to make good, safe decisions for our local actions. We remain available to answer any questions, accept applications for both Veterans and volunteers and work to be ready to go once the all-clear is given! Go to our website (listed below) for easy access to applications, answers to our frequently asked questions, access to our flight photos and more!

Speaking of our website, if you find yourself in need of making a tax-deductible donation at the end of the year, we are honored to accept! You can securely donate on our “Donate” page by credit card or through PayPal. If you would rather send a check our mailing address is listed below. Indy Honor Flight is staffed entirely by unpaid volunteers and EVERY dollar goes to supporting our Veteran activities. Some charities spend an enormous portion of donations to pay staff and support facilities. We work out of our homes, for free, just like the trip we provide for wartime Veterans of WWII, Korea and Vietnam. We humbly ask for your support.

I won’t waste time talking about the issues we have faced this year-there is not one part of it we can control. What we can do is control our own attitudes. I am thrilled to be able to look forward to better times. As we prepare to celebrate my favorite time of year, I wish each of you good health, safe travels and a wonderful New Year!

See you in 2021!

In service,
Dale True, IHF Chairman

November 2020 Newsletter

Chairman’s Corner

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! Each year, when November rolls around, we find ourselves stopping to review the important things and people in our lives and pause to give thanks.

We at Indy Honor Flight have had the incredible privilege to meet, serve and get to know some of the most wonderful people on the planet-our country’s Veterans. We do not give lip service to our heroes, each of them know we are sincere with our respect and honor. Our complete staff is made up of unpaid volunteers who donate hundreds of hours every year (and money from our own pockets) to find, recruit and hold in absolute admiration those who have served our country. We are extremely grateful for every single person who has served wearing the cloth of our country. We also encourage our friends, families and co-workers to remember to thank those who are currently serving. The cost of freedom must continually be paid if we are to remain the pillar of democracy our republic represents.

While 2020 has given everyone some very unexpected challenges, our mission remains unchanged, our resolve to honor those who are waiting on their Honor Flight is unwavering. We continue to search for eligible Veterans and we are doing all we can to keep the Honor Flight program viable. We are anxious to fly, but only when we can properly protect our Hoosier heroes. There are plans and ideas happening behind the scenes across the nation to make this happen, please be patient, stay healthy and stay in contact with us to be aware of updates.

We have a very fun and impressive thing to tell you about; one of our therapy dogs, the ever-so-smart-and-loveable Dixie and her human, Brian, are I part of the cast of a new TV series! It is called THE PACK and it premiered on November 20th on Amazon Prime. Dixie has been quite a popular dog at many, many charity events for children and Veterans all around our Indiana and now they have travelled all around the world! The show is kind of like the Amazing Race only with dog/person teams competing. Brian and Dixie have shown their love of Veterans and have promoted IHF everywhere they have travelled. We are so happy for Dixie and Brian and wish them the very best luck with the show. We encourage everyone to watch and root for TEAM DIXIE! Click here to watch The Pack Amazon Prime – The Pack You must have a membership to Amazon Prime to watch. (IHF does not own the rights to The Pack, nor does it benefit from you buying a membership. we just think it’s cool that our Dixie is famous).

As we go through the busy Thanksgiving and Christmas season, please feel free to reach out to us with any questions you may have, or if you need a speaker for a civic group. We are also always on the lookout for updated addresses, phone numbers and such for our heroes, both those who have flown with us and those who are waiting. Our website is open 24-hours a day with information for you!
With things continuing to change in our world all of Indy Honor Flight hopes you will stay safe, healthy and happy. Please enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday and take a moment to truly give thanks for another day of life with people you love. Welcome home.

In service,
Dale True, IHF Chairman

Chairman’s Corner

Boo!

Candy time! Here we are, almost to Halloween and it is hard to believe we will be gathering for Thanksgiving soon. So many things have happened during the last few months, some good, some not good. Here at Indy Honor Flight we prefer to stay positive and we are so grateful for all of you-whether you are a Veteran or a volunteer. It is our honor to know and serve with so many wonderful people. Our group has continued to do as much as we safely can and we want to remind everyone while we are still unable to do the normal activities, we are watching the news and circumstances carefully. Our aircraft are reserved, we are keeping our fingers crossed and we are hoping to be able to fly again soon!

As we mentioned in the last newsletter, we started our own YouTube video channel and posted our first video-have you seen it? If not, please follow this link to find our channel: Indy Honor Flight YouTube Channel

But wait, there’s more! Just last week we have posted our first videos created by a Physical Therapy student! Why, you ask? These videos, the beginning of a series, will help our Veterans stay limber and strong as they either wait to fly or are waiting to begin attending our monthly activities. These videos demonstrate simple, but effect exercises that almost anyone can do and do not require any special equipment. All of the content we post is free, just like our Honor Flights!

These videos will stay on the channel so Veterans and family members can visit anytime to continue to learn, build better balance and strength. We will be releasing more of these videos in the weeks to come. Subscribe to the channel and watch for more to come soon!

We also send out information on our Face Book page and on Instagram: Indy Honor Flight. Please watch these sources for updates and information, this is our best way to quickly let folks know what we are up to. We also share occasional historical events of interest and other positive stories.

A reminder to all-our staff is a small group of unpaid volunteers and while we do our best to stay up to date, it really helps us if you can notify us of address changes, changes to phone numbers, or, unfortunately, when one of our alumni or a Veteran on our waiting list passes. Just drop us a note at Info@indyhonorflight.org of give us a call at 317-559-1600 so we can keep our records accurate. We really appreciate it.

Now, please stay healthy and safe-take care of each other and always take the time to recognize any Veteran you see with a “thank you” and a “welcome home”. These simple words can make a bad day better and a good day fantastic. We love and respect the service of our heroes, never think we are finished, we are just waiting! See you “on the curb”!

Dale True, Chairman

September 2020 Newsletter

Chairman’s Corner

Fall Greetings to All!

While it is hard to believe we are officially into fall, many are enjoying the cooler weather and looking forward to the lovely colors that will soon be on display! Regardless of your favorite season, there is always something special to enjoy all year ‘round. Our message to all: stay safe and stay healthy!

While almost all of our normal activities are postponed, we have been enjoying great support from some wonderful groups over the past few weeks. Despite the restrictions we have been able to hold our Avon Cruise in all summer and many, many folks have truly enjoyed the time out of the house while looking at some awesome cars. Two of our supporting groups were able to safely hold golf fundraisers benefitting IHF, both had outstanding weather and a great turnout. We have another annual car show coming up very soon, check out our Face Book page for details. Every penny of the money raised by these special events, along with every donation, go directly to help us fly our heroes. Not one person involved with IHF is paid; all of our work is done by dedicated volunteers!

We have been able to provide speakers to some civic groups recently, if you know of a group who would like to hear more about what we do, please contact us to schedule a speaker. We love to tell the story of Indy Honor Flight and the way these flights touch the hearts of Hoosier heroes.

We started our own YouTube channel and posted our first video-have you seen it? Go to Indy Honor Flight YouTube Channel to watch a quick message to our Veterans! We will be adding content as we go along in an effort to share information to all of our volunteers, supporters and, most importantly, our beloved Veterans. While we are not professional movie makers, we are professionals who love what we do! Subscribe to the channel and watch for more to come soon! We also send out information on our Face Book page: Indy Honor Flight. Please watch this source for updates and information, this is our best way to quickly let folks know what we are up to.

We recently celebrated the birthdays of two special ladies, Vera and Pearl. Both of these heroes reached their 100th birthday in 2020! Both are WWII Veterans and we are so impressed with their service, longevity and fantastic attitudes! We wish all of our Veterans a long and healthy life, you deserve it!

So, go enjoy your favorite fall activities, stay healthy and watch our sources for updates as we all go about during this very different time. We love and respect the service of our heroes, never think we are finished, we are just waiting! See you “on the curb”!

I’ve learned that no matter what happens, or how bad it seems today, life does go on, and it will be better tomorrow.

Chairman’s Corner

Hello Everyone!

We hope the dog days of summer are treating all of you well-I know how much so many of us enjoy the fresh vegetables and fruits from the garden or from the local farmers market. There is nothing to compare to a fresh tomato on a BLT or a burger! The heat and humidity can get old for some of us, but many others prefer the summer to the cold of an Indiana winter. We can also enjoy the flowers and flowering plants of summer, along with the quiet sunsets.

All of Indy Honor Flight is watching the local circumstances and hoping we will be able get back into doing the activities we enjoy so much. The unfortunate truth of the moment is we cannot do too much, but we are trying to communicate as well as we are able to our heroes and their families. All of our normal activities are suspended; our annual reunion, our monthly meals and our flights. The good news is our Avon Cruise-in Car Show is going on every Saturday evening through the end of September. Stop by the Lowes parking lot on Rockville Road in Avon around 6:00PM and see great cars and visit with some really nice people! Buy a 50-50 ticket while you are there and help us keep flying, too!

If you want to help support us please watch our Face Book page for events and other ways to help us honor our Veterans.

While 2020 is not working out like we wanted it to, we are looking forward to 2021 and are planning our spring flights with a hopeful outlook. No matter what happens please remember to keep looking up, because that is where the planes go! Remember the reserved flight dates of April 17th and May 22nd, please mark your calendar and save the dates! If everything clears up we will be more than ready to honor our heroes and we will want all of you to come out and help us celebrate.

We need some help from all of you- this is a difficult topic, but important. We need to keep our records up to date. If you learn of the passing of a Veteran who is either on our wait list or who has flown with us, please let us know. You can contact us by phone or email, our contact information is listed at the bottom of this email.

So many things are changing in our world, but one thing stays the same-we love our Veterans and we will maintain our focus on honoring them. Indy Honor Flight will be here when we are able to safely fly again, you can bet on it!

Stay safe, stay healthy-

Dale True, Chairman

July 2020 Newsletter

Chairman’s Corner

Dear all Indy Honor Flight Veterans, Friends and Donors-

Happy July-while yes, it has been pretty warm, we are not shoveling snow or chipping ice off the windshield! Every day we are looking for the best in what we are going through, some days you have to look a little harder than others. Personally, I love summer and enjoy being outdoors as much as possible. I hope you and your loved ones are able to spend some good time together this summer.

We have very good news for you-we have reserved aircraft for two spring flights!! Please save the dates: April 17 and May 22, 2021. We are thinking positively and preparing to host our heroes again for a day they will never forget! Please mark your calendars now, we will need all of our helpers to make this happen. We will host safety trainings for new volunteers and for those who want to “knock the rust off”, watch for the dates in late winter 2020.

Please Note: If you or a loved one was scheduled for one of our spring 2020 flights, your seat is still reserved, so make sure you are available for the new dates. We will be in contact with you well in advance, but we cannot take you if you are cruising the Rivera or relaxing on the beaches of Spain!

In the meantime, our Summer Cruise-in Car Shows are back in action, every Saturday evening (unless it storms) at the Lowe’s parking lot in Avon, IN. We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Hales and the Avon Lowes for hosting this event yet another summer. A relaxing time visiting with great people, looking at some very cool cars and being outdoors. But a 50/50 ticket while you are there and support IHF! I little birdy told me there may even be some new very cool T-shirts for purchase soon as well! All proceeds benefit the IHF.

We had a good (but a little wet) time at the famous Connersville landmark Kunkel’s Drive-In. A good turn out, some super cars, tasty chow and a nice time helped us raise some needed cash for our operations. Many thanks to Cheryl and her crew for putting this together, the work was appreciated, and a good time was had by all who attended.

We have continued to be notified of our heroes passing and unfortunately have been unable to attend many of the services due to the virus and related issues. We are heartbroken when each one goes on, but we are so proud to have had the opportunity to meet, serve and love every single one. One thing you can take to the bank; Indy Honor Flight loves our Veterans! Every day our volunteers are speaking to past and future honorees and letting them know they are appreciated and remembered for the service they gave to our country.

We are still accepting applications from Veterans, Guardians and Volunteers-we are still here and are so ready to get back to flying. Watch our Face Book page for updates and keep smiling.

In the meantime, thank a Veteran today for the freedom you enjoy.

In service,
Dale True Chairman, Indy Honor Flight
